Week 7 Caricature Handouts

This is an example of a 3-5 min sketch. This stage is "lay-in" or "block-in". Every drawing will begin this way.

It's up to you or the model session how much more time you want to spend after this. If you have 10 minutes, then add 10 minutes worth of shadow, tone and edges. If you have 20 minutes or more, then add tone and edges and keep going until the time runs out.

This week I suggested you do at least 20 of these just to practice observing and then exaggerating. That is just a suggestion. Do as many or as few as it takes for you to get warmed up to concept. This week is more of an observation exercise so don't stress too much about the end result.

If you want to continue to practice rendering then do as many shaded/toned drawings as you can. Those usually take 5-10 minutes to start adding tone but take as long as you like. The important thing is to practice making correct edges.

Example progression. The time is an estimate based on typical life drawing scenario. Take as much time as you need at any stage. Speed will come with experience. It's not how fast you draw, but how quickly you make good decisions. Also with the rendering stage, the quality of your edges will take years.

For exercise, copy one of these russian academic drawings in this folder. Spend 2,3 hours or more. Try to match their 1. drawing, 2. values and 3. edges as best as you can.
